Blog your music
September 14th, 2007 by Nico Ramon
I write music and record it in my home studio. However, this process takes quite a while usually and I finish only one song at a time. I have realized that making enough songs for an album will take ages, but I still want to get my songs out there. Most obvious option would of course be making an EP of three or two songs, put up a MySpace site and upload the songs there. However, that’s exactly what every other band does already. I have tried really hard to think of another approach and here is something that came into my mind.
Start a blog for your music. Yes, a blog. Blogging phenomenon is still growing and it is about time that musicians embrace it as promotional platform. There are a lot of promotional channels for blogs alone, which can be leveraged to gain exposure for the blog. Now, there are a lot of possibilities how to run that blog, but the main idea is that you publish one finished song at a time through your blog. Naturally there will be some long gaps between the finished songs, when you are composing and recording new music. So in the meantime use the blog to talk to your fans, post pictures of the recording process and let them know better who you are or what yor band is about. This is much more personal approach and you also create a cycle of continuous interaction with your fans.

I really like this idea of blogging the music as it is finished. I know that when I am creating demos of my music, I usually want some feedback right away. Blogging the music would do just that.

Nice to hear that you like the idea sharonjk. I have decided already for myself that I will embrace this idea after I have finished a couple of songs. It is always good to have some songs “in the bank” when you start building a community around you and your music.
Another interesting aspect about this “blog your music” idea is that your fans can subscribe to the latest happenings on your blog through RSS feeds. There are also many widgets made for blogs that encourage communication between the blog readers and the author. It will be interesting to see how music fans embrace these new developments.

As long as you are blogging your audio files why not add any videos you have and look into pay for post not only to add to your blog but to get other bloggers to blog your music. Also this article was added to todays list of links on my own blog. I browse all the feeds I obtain and look for 5 of the best articles each week.

Very good idea. I have been leaning on one of the artists I work with to do just this. I set her up a wordpress blog and tricked it out for her to be able to post songs in a cool way. Still, she hasn’t quite embraced it enough to use it as well as it could be. Like with what you said about posting photos and updates. She goes as far as events listings.

I’ve been blogging for about 2 years, but my approach is somewhat more all encompassing. I blog many of my songs as they’re being written (maybe unprofessional but what the hey), I blog performances, video and pictures -I use my blog for whatever I feel like at the time. I definitely agree that people want to keep track of what you’re up to.

I agree totally. I’ve been saying that to artists in Nashville for quite a while. You hit the nail on the head on several points. I blogged about it earlier this week and gave you some link love. Keep up the good posts. Blog About Being An Artist or Musician. Communicate with Your Fans!

Undoubtedly! But never forget, the most important way to get your music out there is by playing it… there is no substitute for gigging, but going from recording to gigging is a step requires you to be bold and assertive to yourself.

While using a blog to keep your fans informed you can also use a blog to get feedback from your fans and interact with them in many different ways. Running contests for your fans through your blog and maybe interacting those contests with your shows would be a great fan interaction.

A great way to promote your music, but don’t forget the MySpace thing, you should consider it too.

They pulled me to the botton of the table, broached my animatronics tantalizingly apart and high, and fixated Steven’s huge, drawstring jawbone into my grunting hole. He alternated this from one nude bollywood celebrity to another.
